...The name "Piast" appears in the Chronicles as the name of a farmer who was Siemobit's father, but this description is thought to have been added later from a Rhine legend. "Piast" was first used as a dynasty name in Silesia at the end of the 16th century, and it quickly became popular after Adam Naruszewicz (1733-96) used it in his "History of the Polish People" (1780-1824), the first academic history of Poland. He described the Piast dynasty as an ideal era in which national unity was maintained by a strong royal authority, and this is the basic view of the Piast dynasty that Polish historians continued to hold throughout the 19th century. ...
