The Adventures of Telemaque

A full-length novel by French author Fenelon. Published in 1699. Inspired by the fourth book of Homer's Odyssey, Telemachus, son of Ulysses, sets out on a journey to find his father, overcoming various obstacles along the way, and recounts his adventures. Mentor, who accompanies Telemachus on the journey, turns out to be none other than the goddess Minerva, who has transformed herself to protect him. Written for the education of the Duke of Burgundy, Fenelon drew on a wide range of material, not only from Homer but also from the works of Greek poets and historians, and includes political morality throughout, warning against ambition and emphasizing the tragedy of war. In the 18th century, known as the Golden Age of Utopia, Fenelon's book was a must-read and a favorite, influencing utopists.

フランスの作家フェヌロンの長編小説。1699年刊。ホメロスの『オデュッセイア』第四編に想を得て書かれた。ユリシーズの息子テレマック（テレマコス）はさまざまな困難を克服しつつ父親を探し求める旅に出て、その冒険譚(たん)を語る。旅に随行するメントールは、テレマックを守護するため姿を変えた女神ミネルバにほかならないことが明らかになる。ブルゴーニュ公の教育のために書かれたものだが、フェヌロンはホメロスばかりでなく、ギリシアの詩人や歴史家の作に広く題材を求め、野心を戒め、戦争の悲惨を強調するなど、随所に政治道徳を盛り込んだ。ユートピアの黄金時代と称される18世紀には、フェヌロンのこの書は必読書として愛読され、ユートピストたちに影響を与えた。
