Eel pond - Eel pond

Japanese:
Eel pond - Eel pond

A crater lake at the southeastern end of the Satsuma Peninsula in Kagoshima Prefecture. It is located alongside Lake Ikeda and belongs to Ibusuki City. It is a crater lake of the Unagi volcano, with a crater wall that forms a cliff of about 100 meters, and no rivers flowing into it. It has a long axis of 1.3 kilometers, a short axis of 1 kilometers, a circumference of 4.2 kilometers, and an area of 1.2 square kilometers. The water surface is 122 meters above sea level, and the maximum depth is 55.8 meters, making it deep for a crater lake. The annual water temperature of the deep water layer is around 10 degrees Celsius, and the transparency is 8.5 meters. It is classified as a eutrophic lake, and carp, crucian carp, giant eels, and other fish live in the lake. It is said that the name comes from the fact that a 1.5-meter-long eel was once caught in the lake. On a narrow slope at the northeastern end is Unagi Onsen (a sulfurous spring). The water temperature of this hot spring is close to 100°C, and the steam from various places in the village is used for daily cooking, with the stove-shaped facilities here called "sume." Research is also being conducted into geothermal development to use the high-temperature steam as an energy source. The hot spring is part of Kirishima-Kinkowan National Park, and is a 15-minute bus ride from Yamakawa Station on the JR Ibusuki-Makurazaki Line.
