Claude de Seyssel

Claude de Seyssel
Around 1450 - 1520
French political thinker and clergyman. Born in the Duchy of Savoy, a small country in the Alps. After studying law, he was a skilled adviser to King Louis XII of France and to the Duchy of Savoy, and was a great leader in both the country's Italian policies. As a clergyman, he served as Bishop of Marseille and Archbishop of Turin. His name became known to posterity for his book La monarchie de France (written in 1515, published in 1519). In this book, Seyssels supports monarchy, but argues that royal power should not be absolute, but should be bound by religion, justice, and ancient customs (the polis). It is renowned as a classic in the history of political thought that clearly shows the position of limited monarchy.
