Kirkuk - Kirkuk (English spelling)

Kirkuk - Kirkuk (English spelling)

A city in northeastern Iraq. Capital of At-Ta'min province. Population 418,624 (1987 census), 755,700 (2003 estimate). It is the economic center of Kurdistan and is known today as an oil city. It was a distribution center for wheat, barley, fruit, and sheep in the surrounding agricultural and pastoral areas inhabited by Kurds since ancient times. Wool from this region is especially famous. Since the discovery of the Kirkuk oil field nearby in 1927, it has rapidly developed as a base for oil development and industrialization. Most of Iraq's crude oil is produced here and transported by pipeline to Mediterranean ports such as Trabrus (Lebanon) and Banyas (Syria). An oil refinery has been built in the suburb of Baba Gurgul, and spinning and wool factories are also increasing. A railway runs through the city, connecting it to Baghdad. Ruins of ancient cities are scattered around the city.
