It is spoken mainly in Kyrgyzstan in Central Asia, as well as in neighboring countries, the Xinjiang Kyrgyz Autonomous Region in China, and Afghanistan. It has about 2.1 million speakers. It is closely related to Kazakh and Karakalpak, and is classified as a northwestern dialect (Kipchak dialect) of Turkic languages. The Yenisei-Kyrgyz language of the Yenisei River basin is also sometimes called Kyrgyz, and although it is also a Turkic language, the degree of its closeness to the above Kyrgyz is unclear. It has used the Roman alphabet since 1927, and the Russian alphabet since 1939. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
