…the abbreviation for the Gosudarstvennoe politicheskoe upravlenie (State Political Security Service), the political police agency of the Soviet Union. It was a peacetime organization that was reorganized in 1922 from the Cheka (Extraordinary Committee), which was the Soviet power's repressive and anti-revolutionary agency. With the formation of the Soviet Union in 1923, it became the United State Political Security Service (OGPU).
