Funnel-eared bat

Japanese: アシナガコウモリ（英語表記）funnel‐eared bat

Any mammalian species of the genus Natalus (chiroptera, family Pterygota), insectivorous, with abnormally elongated hind legs and brightly colored bodies (illustration). They are found in one genus and eight species, distributed from Mexico to Brazil and the West Indies. The greater long-eared bat N. major , found on the islands of Cuba, Jamaica, and Hispaniola, has a body length of 5 cm, a forearm length of 4 cm, and weighs about 10 g. The hind legs and tail are longer than the body length, and the flying membrane is relatively wide. The ears are funnel-shaped with pointed tips, and the tragus in front of the ears is triangular.

虫食性で後肢が異常に細長く，体色が鮮やかな翼手目アシナガコウモリ科アシナガコウモリ属Natalusに属する哺乳類の総称（イラスト）。メキシコからブラジルまでと西インド諸島に分布し，1属8種がある。キューバ，ジャマイカ，イスパニオラの各島に分布するオオアシナガコウモリN.majorは体長5cm，前腕長4cm，体重10g前後。後肢と尾は体長よりも長く，飛膜は比較的幅広い。耳介は先端がとがった漏斗形で，耳介の前方にある耳珠（じしゆ）は三角形。
