Abangan (English spelling)

Abangan (English spelling)
A Javanese word referring to a Muslim who is not very devout. Devout Muslims wear white robes, so in Javanese they are called "white-robed people" (wong putihan), whereas less devout believers are called "red-robed people" (wong abangan). As a result, in Central Java the word has a derogatory nuance. From this folk concept, American cultural anthropologist Geertz constructed the following analytical concept: Abangan is a cultural type that emphasizes the animistic elements of Java's multi-layered beliefs (syncretism), which are made up of animistic, Hindu-Buddhist, and Islamic elements, and the social class that carries it is the peasant class of Central and Eastern Java.
