Urban means city-like or urban, and is also called urban design. It is a method developed in Europe and the United States to improve and beautify the form and landscape of cities. Urban space is made up of many buildings, roads, trees, street furniture, etc. Urban design regards this whole as a single, unified design subject, and designs its spatiality, form, color, etc. The goal is not only beauty, but also various values such as comfort, fun, surprise, and individuality, and it also seeks to incorporate values from the perspective of human sensibilities into city development.

アーバンは都市的，都会的という意味で，都市デザインともいう。都市の形態や景観を整え美しくするため，欧米で発達した手法である。都市空間は，多くの建築物，道路，樹木，ストリート･ファニチャーなどによって構成されている。アーバン･デザインとは，この全体をひとつのまとまったデザイン対象としてとらえ，その空間性，形態，色彩などをデザインすることである。目的としては，美しさだけでなく，安らぎ，楽しさ，驚き，個性などさまざまの価値が求められ，人間の感性面の価値も都市づくりに取り入れようとするものである。
