Winter journey - Fuyu no Tabi (English name) Winterreise

This is a 24-song cycle (Op. 89) composed by Schubert in 1827. It is one of his three great song cycles, along with "The Beautiful Mill Girl" and "Swan Song," and is famous as a masterpiece that opened up a new dimension to German song. Like "The Beautiful Mill Girl," this song cycle was composed to a poem by Muller, and its theme is the imaginary landscape of a young man's journey after being heartbroken. Although there is no clear plot, the psychology of a young man wandering between reality and fiction is depicted as if appearing and disappearing piece by piece. The overall atmosphere is dark and hopeless, and it can be seen as reflecting the various sufferings that surrounded the composer in the year before his death, such as illness, poverty, and discord in human relationships. Musically, it is characterized by flexible melodies and a remarkable richness of piano accompaniment. The accompaniment section, which allows for complex psychological depictions, was particularly highly praised, and had a great influence on the accompaniment writing style of German Romantic songs.

Among the 24 songs, there are some dramatic and varied pieces such as the ninth song, Irrlicht (Will-o'-the-Wisp), but many of the songs express a lonely beauty through music, following the lyrics dominated by resignation. The 15th song, Die Krähe (The Crow), and the 20th song, Der Wegweiser (The Signpost), are representative examples. The fifth song, Der Lindenbaum (The Linden Tree), which simply sings of longing for one's hometown, is particularly famous and has been arranged for chorus and is loved all over the world.
