…Following the heyday of the Old School, in the second half of the 18th century, eclecticism was so prevalent that eight or nine out of ten famous Confucian scholars were said to be eclectic scholars, and it dominated the Confucian world. Representative theories can be seen in Inoue Kinga's "Jingi Sechu" (1764), a proponent of eclecticism, and Katayama Kaneyama's "Yanshi Suito" (1775). What they had in common was their academic method of choosing and selecting from various previous theories, from the commentaries and commentaries of the Han and Tang dynasties to the theory of logic of the Song and Ming dynasties, without being bound by any of the existing theories such as Zhu Xi school or Yangming school, in order to achieve "reasonableness." …
