A group of volcanic islands in French Polynesia in the South Pacific. They are also called the Marquesas Islands. They consist of 14 islands, including Nuku Hiva and Hiva Oa, and produce copra. The Spanish arrived in 1595, and it became a French territory in 1842. Since then, the population has drastically decreased due to violence by European whalers and other fishermen, and diseases they brought with them. The painter Gauguin died on Hiva Oa, and Melville's novel Typee was set on Nuku Hiva. 1049 ^km2 . 9264 people (2012).
