A nuclide that undergoes nuclear fission with thermal neutrons, and is generally used to refer to fertile nuclei, but the distinction between fissile materials and fissile materials is not clear in Japan's nuclear energy regulations. In addition to natural uranium 235, artificially produced plutonium 239 and uranium 233 are considered fissile nuclides in the narrow sense, but fissionable nuclides that can undergo nuclear fission with fast neutrons are also often translated as fissionable nuclides. If we broadly consider incident neutrons with energy of 20 MeV (mega electron volts) or less, this also includes uranium 238 and thorium 232.
