Mean time between failures. The average time between when a system failure is repaired and when the next failure occurs. The longer the MTBF, the higher the system reliability. It is often used as an index of hard disk reliability. The formula for calculating MTBF is MTBF = total operating time - total repair time ÷ number of repairs.
