...They are also called ACVs (short for air cushion vehicles), GEMs (short for ground effect machines) or air cars because they float by using the ground effect, but they are often called air cushion ships because of their high utility as a means of maritime transportation, such as being able to reach ultra-high speeds of nearly 100 knots, which cannot be achieved by conventional ships. In Japan, they are better known as Hovercrafts, the trademark name of a type developed in the UK.
