Kızıl baş (English spelling)

Qizilbāsh is also called Qizil-bāsh. It is a name given by Sunni Turks to seven Shiite Turkmen tribes who supported Ismail I, who founded the Safavid dynasty in Iran in the early 16th century. It means "red head" in Turkish, and comes from the red hoods they wore. In the early Safavid dynasty, they boasted great power, but were weakened by the military reforms of Abbas I. Later, it came to refer to all Shiite believers in eastern Anatolia, and in 18th century Afghanistan, it became the name for the Persian-speaking Turkmen living in Kabul and other places.
