Abakan (English spelling)
The capital of the Khakassia Republic, located in the south of Eastern Siberia, in central-eastern Russia. It is located about 280 km south-southwest of Krasnoyarsk, on the left bank of the Abakan River near its confluence with the Yenisei River. It is a key transportation point in southern Eastern Siberia, where the Barnaul-Tayshet South-Siberian Railway passes, and a branch line to the Novosibirsk-Tayshet Trans-Siberian Railway branches off. It is also the starting point of the highway to the southern Tuva Republic, and is connected to Krasnoyarsk by regular ferries running on the Krasnoyarsk artificial lake on the Yenisei River. There is also an airport. The main industries in the city have been food processing (meat and confectionery) that processes local agricultural products, wood processing, and furniture manufacturing, but a large factory that manufactures freight cars for transporting large containers and a steel casting factory are being built as part of the Sayan Industrial Complex construction project. There is the Khakassia Institute of History, Language, and Literature, and the Pedagogical University. Population: 165,183 (2010).
