Psychedelic - psychedelic

Etymologically, it means to express the mind clearly. In 1943, Swiss chemist Albert Hofmann (1906-2008) accidentally discovered a drug called LSD, which caused hallucinatory experiences similar to those of schizophrenia, and was thought to represent the human unconscious. As such, the term psychedelic means that these artificially created hallucinations represent the unconscious mind. Other drugs that induce this type of hallucination include cannabis and mescaline. All of these drugs affect perception and cognition, and are considered to reveal the depths of the mind.

In the 1960s, art related to hallucinations caused by drugs such as LSD and mescaline was collectively called psychedelic art, and was briefly popular in the United States. However, the term later came to refer to graphics and sound effects created using electronic technology such as light and sound. Traditional paintings are visual and static, but when it comes to psychedelic paintings, it also includes kinetic and auditory effects.

語源的には心を明らかに表すという意味。1943年スイスの化学者ホフマンAlbert Hofmann（1906―2008）が偶然に発見したLSDという薬品は統合失調症（精神分裂病）の幻覚と類似の幻覚体験をもたらしたので、あたかもこれが人間の無意識を表しているかのように考えられたことから、こうした人工的につくられた幻覚が無意識的な心を表しているという意味でサイケデリックという。この種の幻覚を誘発するものは、このほかに大麻(たいま)、メスカリンなどがある。これらの薬物は、いずれも知覚、認識に影響を与えるもので、心の深層を現すものであるかのようにみなされている。

　なお、LSD、メスカリンといった薬物によっておこされる幻覚に関連のある芸術のことを、1960年代にはサイケデリック・アートpsychedelic artと総称するようになり、一時アメリカで流行した。しかしその後は、電子技術を使ってつくられる光・音などによって創作されるグラフィック、音響効果のことをさすようになった。従来の絵画は視覚的で静止しているが、サイケデリック絵画といわれるときは、運動的・聴覚的効果をも包括している。
