Petrovich Avvakum

A 17th-century Russian archpriest. A leader of the separatist (Raskolniki) movement that opposed the liturgical reforms of Patriarch Nikon of Moscow. He was born to a priest in the village of Grigorovo in Nizhny Novgorod Oblast. At the time, there was a growing movement for church reform in Russia, and Abakum, who had been ordained, was initially actively involved in the reform movement. He later became archpriest of the Kazan Cathedral in the Moscow Kremlin. However, when Nikon became Patriarch of Moscow (1652) and embarked on liturgical reforms in accordance with Greek practice at the time, Abakum strongly opposed this.

17世紀ロシアの長司祭。モスクワ総主教ニコンの典礼改革に反対した分離派(ラスコーリニキ)の指導者。ニジニノブゴロド州グリゴロボ村の司祭の子として生まれた。当時のロシアでは教会改革の機運が高まっており，聖職についたアバクムも当初は積極的に改革運動に関与した。のちモスクワでクレムリンのカザン大聖堂の長司祭となった。しかしニコンがモスクワ総主教となり(1652)，当時のギリシアの慣行に従った典礼改革にのりだすと，アバクムは正面からこれに反対した。
