1620‐82 A 17th-century Russian archpriest. A leader of the separatist (Raskolniki) movement that opposed the liturgical reforms of Patriarch Nikon of Moscow. He was born to a priest in the village of Grigorovo in Nizhny Novgorod Oblast. At the time, there was a growing movement for church reform in Russia, and Abakum, who had been ordained, was initially actively involved in the reform movement. He later became archpriest of the Kazan Cathedral in the Moscow Kremlin. However, when Nikon became Patriarch of Moscow (1652) and embarked on liturgical reforms in accordance with Greek practice at the time, Abakum strongly opposed this.
