Aleksandr Sergeevich Griboedov

Russian playwright and diplomat. Born into a distinguished aristocratic family, he studied at Moscow University as a child prodigy, and was a leading intellectual fluent in many foreign languages ​​and music. He served in the military during the Patriotic War caused by Napoleon's invasion in 1812, but after retiring he joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and served at the legation in Persia (Iran) in 1818, and as a diplomat attached to the Russian military headquarters in the Caucasus from 1822. Due to his friendship with innovative young officers such as Ryleyev during his time in St. Petersburg, he was arrested on suspicion of involvement in the Decembrist Revolt, but was released due to insufficient evidence. In 1828, he became the ambassador to Persia, but was attacked and killed by a mob opposed to Russia's expansionist policy. His literary works include his first adaptation, "A Young Couple" (1814), as well as several comedies and the masterpiece "Sorrows of Wit" (1824).

ロシアの劇作家、外交官。名門貴族出の神童としてモスクワ大学の諸学部に学び、多くの外国語と音楽に堪能(たんのう)な最高の知識人。1812年のナポレオン侵入による祖国戦争時代には軍務についたが、退役後外務省に入り、18年在ペルシア（イラン）公使館、22年以後カフカスのロシア軍司令部付外交官として勤務。ペテルブルグ時代のルイレーエフら革新的な青年士官たちとの交友関係からデカブリストの乱に関与した疑いで逮捕されたが、証拠不十分で釈放された。28年駐ペルシア特派大使となったが、ロシアの拡張政策に反対する暴徒の襲撃にあい殺害された。文学作品として、翻案の処女作『若い夫婦』（1814）ほか、数編の喜劇と名作『知恵の悲しみ』（1824）がある。
