Masaji Kiyokawa

Born: February 11, 1913 in Toyohashi, Aichi
[Died] April 13, 1999. Tokyo, Bunkyo. A swimmer. Won first place in the 100m backstroke at the 1932 Los Angeles Olympic Games, and placed third in the 100m backstroke at the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games. Graduated from Tokyo University of Commerce in 1936. He contributed to the development of Japanese swimming as a coach. In 1969, he became an IOC member, a permanent member in 1975, and vice president from 1979 to 1983, and has been an honorary member since 1989. He was awarded the Medal with Purple Ribbon in 1963, the Order of the Sacred Treasure, Second Class in 1984, and the Olympic Order, Silver Medal in 1989. He was awarded the Asahi Prize in 1990. His main works include "Sports Essays" (1943) and "Tokyo Olympism Thoughts: Sports Foreign Correspondence" (1963). (→ Berlin Olympic Games)

水泳選手。1932年ロサンゼルス・オリンピック競技大会で 100m背泳ぎ優勝，1936年ベルリン大会では 100m背泳ぎ 3位。1936年東京商科大学卒業。以後コーチとして日本水泳界の発展に貢献した。1969年国際オリンピック委員会 IOC委員，1975年同常任理事，1979～83年同副会長を務め，1989年から同名誉委員。1963年紫綬褒章，1984年勲二等瑞宝章，1989年オリンピック・オーダー銀章受章。1990年朝日賞受賞。主著『スポーツの随想』（1943），『東京オリンピックに思う：スポーツの外国通信』（1963）など。（→ベルリン・オリンピック競技大会）
