The chemical formula is NaI. There are anhydrous forms, dihydrate NaI･2H ₂ O, and pentahydrate NaI･5H ₂ O. The anhydrous form is a colorless cubic crystal. It has a sodium chloride structure and a lattice constant of 6.4728 Å. Its specific gravity is 3.667. Its melting point is 651°C, and its boiling point is 1300°C. The interatomic distance of the ion pair Na ⁺ -I ^- in the gas is 2.7115 Å. It is deliquescent, with a solubility of 158.7 g (0°C) and 302 g (100°C) in 100 g of water. It dissolves in methyl alcohol, ethyl alcohol, acetone, and glycerin.
