Russian Empress (reigned 1762-1796). Daughter of the German Prince of Anhalt-Zerbst. Married Peter III, killed her husband in a coup by the Royal Guards, ascended to the throne, and appointed herself an enlightened despot. She suppressed the Pugachev Rebellion and strengthened serfdom to the limit. She acquired the Black Sea coast and the North Caucasus, and participated in the partition of Poland.
