Russian Empress (reigned 1762-1796). Daughter of the German Prince of Anhalt-Zerbst. Married Peter III, killed her husband in a coup by the Royal Guards, ascended to the throne, and appointed herself an enlightened despot. She suppressed the Pugachev Rebellion and strengthened serfdom to the limit.
