An edible mushroom of the family Amitaceae, order Matsutake, belonging to the basidiomycetes. The cap is 5-10 cm in diameter, round, and reddish brown or yellowish brown. It is sticky, and the flesh is soft and white with a flesh-colored tinge. The pores on the underside of the cap are shallow, polygonal, of varying sizes, arranged slightly radially, and yellowish mud colored. The stem is 5-6 cm long. A very common mushroom that grows in clusters in pine forests from summer to autumn. It is widely distributed in pine forests in Eurasia, and is eaten in many countries. It is not found in the Americas. It has many local names, such as Amimotase (Tohoku region), Shibatake (Niigata prefecture), Zeni-iguchi (Hyogo prefecture), and Sudoushi (Aichi prefecture).
