After graduating from the Jesuit gymnasium, he studied almost all academic subjects in theology, humanities, natural sciences, and mathematics at various universities. He was a Jesuit (1618). He was a professor of philosophy, mathematics, Hebrew, and Syriac at the University of Würzburg (29). He fled the destruction of the Thirty Years' War and moved to Avignon (31), where he had connections with J. Hevelius and P. Gassendi. He went to Rome at the invitation of the Pope (34) and served as a professor of mathematics at the Roman Academy for a time, but in the latter half of his life he devoted himself to writing (44 in total) and research. He excelled in magnetism, optics, and geology, but his greatest significance was his contribution to the dissemination of knowledge through his teaching, wide-ranging correspondence, and writing. His major works are Ars magna lucis et umbrae (44) and Mundus Subterraneus (64).
