Statius (English spelling) Publius Papinius Statius

Ancient Roman poet. Born in Naples. He was taught poetry by his father and established a reputation as a poet in Rome, but retired to his hometown in his later years, where he died. His extant works include the epic poem "The Theban Tales" (12 volumes), the epic poem "The Tale of Achilles" (unfinished), and the "Silvae" (5 volumes), a collection of 32 poems written from time to time. He had a great influence on medieval poets such as Dante and Chaucer.

古代ローマの詩人。ナポリで生まれる。父親に詩の手ほどきを受け、ローマで詩人としての名声を確立したが、晩年は故郷に隠退し、そこで亡くなった。現存作品としては、叙事詩『テーバイ物語』全12巻、叙事詩『アキレウス物語』（未完）、おりおりに書かれた32編の詩を集めた『シルウァエ』全五巻がある。中世の詩人ダンテやチョーサーに多大の影響を及ぼした。
