Japanese: 胸郭 - きょうかく

An elastic, cage-like skeleton that forms the outer shell of the thorax of reptiles, birds, and mammals. It contains the heart, lungs, and stomach. In humans, it consists of 12 thoracic vertebrae, 12 pairs of ribs, and one sternum, and is movably connected by joints, so that the raising and lowering of the ribs increases and decreases their volume, resulting in the so-called thoracic breathing movement. The space between the ribs is called the intercostal space, which is closed by the intercostal muscles and through which the intercostal arteries, veins, and nerves pass. The lower opening of the rib cage is separated from the abdominal cavity by the diaphragm.

爬虫(はちゅう)類・鳥類・哺乳(ほにゅう)類の類胸部の外郭をつくる弾性のある籠(かご)状の骨格。内部に心臓・肺，胃を含む。ヒトでは，胸椎12個，肋骨12対，胸骨１個からなり，関節で可動的につながっているので，肋骨の上げ下げがその容積の増大減少となり，いわゆる胸式呼吸運動となる。肋骨と肋骨の間は肋間隙(げき)といい，肋間筋でふさがれ，肋間動静脈，肋間神経が通る。胸郭の下口は横隔膜で腹腔と境される。
