An elastic, cage-like skeleton that forms the outer shell of the thorax of reptiles, birds, and mammals. It contains the heart, lungs, and stomach. In humans, it consists of 12 thoracic vertebrae, 12 pairs of ribs, and one sternum, and is movably connected by joints, so that the raising and lowering of the ribs increases and decreases their volume, resulting in the so-called thoracic breathing movement. The space between the ribs is called the intercostal space, which is closed by the intercostal muscles and through which the intercostal arteries, veins, and nerves pass. The lower opening of the rib cage is separated from the abdominal cavity by the diaphragm. → Related topics Sternum | Ribs Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
