A Korean literary official and novelist in the mid-Yi dynasty. His pen name was Danbo. His pen names were Gyosan and Seisho. He held the positions of Minister of State and Minister of State. His family included many famous writers, including his brothers, Ho and Fang, who were both well-known, and his sister, Heo Nanseoheon, a female poet known in Japan and China. He passed his literary examination at the age of 25, and participated in numerous missions to the Ming dynasty, bringing back Catholic documents and vernacular novels. However, he sympathized with his teacher, Yi Da, and his friends, who were not promoted because they were of common lineage, and participated in a plot to overthrow the dynasty, but was discovered in advance and executed. His novel, "The Story of Hong Gildong," depicts the exploits of a righteous thief who rose up against the feudal class system and the exploitation and oppression of the ruling class, and describes the construction of the ideal kingdom of "Lotto." It is the oldest surviving Hangul novel and holds an important place in the history of literature. His other works include "Seishofukuhoko", which contains poems and critiques.

朝鮮，李朝中期の文臣，小説家。字，端甫 (たんほ) 。号，蛟山 (こうざん) ，惺所 (せいしょ) 。官職は刊曹判書，左参賛にいたった。一門に著名な文人が多く，兄の筬，ほうはともに有名で，特に姉の許蘭雪軒は日本，中国にも知られた女流詩人。 25歳で文科に及第，たびたび明国への使節団に加わり，天主教に関する文献や白話小説を持帰った。しかし師の李達や友人たちが庶流出身のため登用されないことに同情し，王朝転覆の謀議に加担，事前に発覚して処刑された。小説『洪吉童伝』は，封建的な身分制度と，支配階級の搾取と圧迫に反対して立上がった義賊の活躍を描き，理想の王国として「ろっ島 (ろっとう) 国」の建設を描いている。現存する最古の本格的なハングル小説の代表作で，文学史上重要な位置を占める。ほかに詩，評論を収録した『惺所覆ほう藁 (せいしょふくほうこう) 』などがある。
