Democracy in America

…During this period, universal suffrage for white adult men, regardless of religious affiliation, was expanded from the western states to the whole of the country, and the principles of participation and self-governance were further established. This surprised the French aristocrat A. de Tocqueville, who traveled to America in the early 1830s, and led him to write Democracy in America (vol. 1, 1835, vol. 2, 1840), an immortal classic of modern democratic theory. What Tocqueville saw here was that the very self-evident traditional idea that democracy is absolutely impossible in large-scale society was no longer valid in a sense different from that understood by Madison and Paine, that is, democracy, which in France tends to mean inevitable resistance by force as an ideology of the fight against the oppression of feudal remnants, was functioning perfectly as a principle of social formation here. …
