A city in western Florida, USA. Population 303,447 (2000). The city is active in the processing and export of phosphate, fruit, and lumber produced in the surrounding area. It is the third largest city in the state and also a resort town. In recent years, many people have been migrating from the northern United States in search of a warmer climate, and the metropolitan population is growing rapidly. In 1539, the Spanish explorer De Soto landed here and concluded a treaty of friendship with the Indians, but the Indians continued to be hostile towards white people, so the construction of a settlement here was slow, beginning in 1823. The foundations of the town were established with the construction of Fort Brook the following year, and the town developed with the development of fishing, the discovery of phosphate in 1883, the opening of the railroad, and the subsequent cigar tobacco manufacturing.
