Sur Sagar (English spelling)

...Although much is unknown about his life and works, according to the biographies compiled by the sect, he was born in 1478 to a Brahmin family near Delhi, and in his youth he heard an exposition of the Bhagavata Purana by Ballabha, and entered the path of Krishna faith. He was welcomed as a hymn-singer at the Srinath Temple, which Ballabha opened in Gokul near Brindavan, and left behind many emotional hymns. He died on the shores of a lake near the temple in 1584. A large number of lyric short poems attributed to him are collected in the Sur Sāgar, but the majority of them were composed as hymns to be chanted at the Srinath Temple. Poems full of love depicting Lord Vishnu incarnated as Krishna and playing as an innocent child through the eyes of his mother Yashoda, and love poems depicting the adoration of Krishna as a young man by his future wife Radha and the gopikas around him, are beloved to this day, and their success in expressing bhakti simply and visually had a great influence on later thought and literature.

…その生涯，作品などについては不明な点が多いが，宗派内で編まれた信徒列伝の類によると，1478年にデリー近郊のバラモンの家に生まれ，青年期にバッラバ師から《バーガバタ･プラーナ》の講釈を聞いてクリシュナ信仰の道にはいり，ブリンダーバン近くのゴークルにバッラバ師が開いたシュリーナート寺院の賛歌詠唱者として迎えられて多数の情感豊かな賛歌を残し，1584年に寺院近くの湖のほとりで没したという。　彼の作とされる膨大な抒情的短詩は《スール･サーガルSūr Sāgar》に収められているが，その大多数はシュリーナート寺院で詠唱する賛歌としてつくられたものである。ビシュヌ神がクリシュナに化身して，無邪気な幼児の姿で戯れるさまを母ヤショーダーの目から写した慈愛あふれる詩，青年になったクリシュナを後に妃となったラーダーと周囲の牧女たちが恋い慕うさまを描いた恋愛詩は，今日まで愛唱されてきており，バクティの平易にして視覚的な表現に成功している点で，後代の思想と文学に大きな影響を及ぼした。…
