Cynicism, also known as the Cynicism School, is a school of ancient Greek philosophy founded by Antisthenes. It was so named because it encouraged people to live a "dog-like" (Greek: kynikos) life, free from social norms and with a view to being selfless and possessive. It is the origin of the English word "cynicism." Diogenes of Sinope is the most well-known member of this school because of his eccentric behavior.
