1912‐2001 Brazilian novelist. Since making his debut at the age of 19, he has published nearly 30 novels using a simple, poetic style and vivid descriptive powers. His works have been translated into more than 30 languages, including Japanese, and many have been made into films and television dramas. His works are consistently set in his hometown, the Nordeste region in northeastern Brazil, and are strongly local in color. Many of his early works are strongly political, depicting cocoa plantation workers, dock workers, homeless children, and the lower classes. He was arrested 11 times and lived in exile twice, but he was also awarded the Stalin International Peace Prize (1951). Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
