Jorge Amado

1912‐2001
Brazilian novelist. Since making his debut at the age of 19, he has published nearly 30 novels using a simple, poetic style and vivid descriptive powers. His works have been translated into more than 30 languages, including Japanese, and many have been made into films and television dramas. His works are consistently set in his hometown, the Nordeste region in northeastern Brazil, and are strongly local in color. Many of his early works are strongly political, depicting cocoa plantation workers, dock workers, homeless children, and the lower classes. He was arrested 11 times and lived in exile twice, but he was also awarded the Stalin International Peace Prize (1951).

ブラジルの小説家。19歳でデビューして以来，平易で詩的な文体と生き生きした描写力を駆使して30編近くの小説を発表し，日本語も含めて30ヵ国語以上に翻訳され，また映画，テレビドラマ化された作品も数多い。作品は一貫して故郷ブラジル北東部ノルデステ地方を舞台とした地方色の濃いものである。前半期の作品はカカオ農園労働者，港湾労働者，浮浪児，下層民を描いた政治臭の強いものが多く，11度の逮捕と2度の亡命生活をし，他方，スターリン国際平和賞を受賞している(1951)。
