A leading British shipping company. Founded in 1839, it merged with White Star in 1934. It was a major player in passenger and cargo transport in the North Atlantic, and traditionally had strength in passenger ships, such as the Lusitania and the Queen Mary. However, with the development of aircraft, the number of sea passengers decreased, and between 1967 and the following year, the company sold the Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth to the United States. In 1969, it launched the Queen Elizabeth (II), and further expanded into ship chartering, hotel management, real estate, etc., but in 1971 it became a subsidiary of Trafalgar House Limited.
