The theory of Marx and others that as capital accumulates, new machines and technologies are adopted, making labor unnecessary, and as a result of the increase in unemployment, workers' lives become worse both in absolute and relative terms. Falling real wages, longer working hours, increased labor intensity, housing shortages, and other factors that make life particularly unstable are absolute impoverishment, while a decrease in wages compared to profits is relative impoverishment.
