Japanese: マゲラン（英語表記）Magelang

A city in central Java, Indonesia. Population 123,000 (1990). Located in the valley between Mount Sumbing (3,371m) in the west, Mount Merbabu (3,142m) in the east, and Mount Merapi (2,911m), it is a key transportation point 60km south of Semarang and to Yogyakarta in the south. Elevation 378m. Located on the left bank of the Progo River, it has a comfortable climate. It was probably used as a stopover point when Hindu culture entered Java from the Dieng Highlands in the northwest, moved south, and eventually blossomed in the Yogyakarta region.

インドネシア，ジャワ島中部にある都市。人口12万3000(1990)。西のスンビン火山(3371m)，東のメルバブー火山(3142m)，メラピ火山(2911m)の裾合谷に位置し，スマランの南60km，南方のジョクジャカルタへ至る交通上の要地である。標高378m。プロゴ川の左岸にあり，しのぎやすい気候に恵まれる。古代にヒンドゥー文化が北西のディエン高地からジャワに入り，南下してやがてジョクジャカルタ地方に開花する際の中継地として利用された地であろう。
