A region in northern Italy. It has an area of 22,125 km2 and a population of 3.92 million (1994). Its capital is Bologna. Except for the Apennine Mountains that stretch to the south and west, most of the region is made up of the Po Valley, and modern agriculture and livestock industries are carried out there. The main agricultural products are wheat, corn, sugar beets, and grapes, all of which rank first or second in terms of yields by region, and Parma cheese is famous as a dairy product. Railway cars, automobiles, and synthetic fibers are produced in the region's major cities. The region is made up of the Emilia and Romagna regions.
