An expressway that crosses the center of Kyushu from east to west. It is managed by West Nippon Expressway Co., Ltd. There are two routes: (1) the Nagasaki-Oita Line, which starts in Nagasaki City, connects with the Kyushu Expressway (Kyushu Expressway) in Tosu City, Saga Prefecture, enters Oita Prefecture along the Chikugo River, goes from Yufu Plateau to Oita City, and connects with the Higashi Kyushu Expressway; and (2) the Nobeoka Line, which branches off from the Kyushu Expressway in Kashima Town, Kumamoto Prefecture, crosses the Kyushu Mountains, and reaches Nobeoka City, Miyazaki Prefecture, where it connects with the Higashi Kyushu Expressway. The total length is 352 kilometers (the Nagasaki-Oita Line is 257 kilometers, the Nobeoka Line is 95 kilometers), and all sections are four lanes (some sections are temporarily two lanes). In 2004, the Nagasaki-Oita Line was completed for a total of 257 kilometers between Nagasaki City and Tosu City (Nagasaki Expressway) and between Tosu City and Oita City (Oita Expressway), but the Nobeoka Line has not yet been opened. The Nagasaki-Oita Line directly connects western and eastern Kyushu with central Kyushu, and also connects tourist centers such as Nagasaki City and Beppu City, playing a major role in the development of the areas along the line. The section from Kashima to Yabe (Yamato Town, Kamimashiki County, Kumamoto Prefecture) is being constructed under the new direct management method, with the Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism taking the lead in the development.
