A commercial and industrial city in the southern part of Karnataka State in southwest India. It is the administrative capital of Mysore District. It is located 125 km southwest of Bangalore, on a hill between the Cauvery River and its tributary, the Kabani River, at an altitude of 770 m. In 1610, the Mysore Kingdom was established and flourished as its capital. After losing the Fourth Anglo-Mysore War in 1799, it became the administrative center under British rule, but in 1831 the administrative center was moved to Bangalore. It is a commercial and industrial center in the southern part of the state, known for cotton and silk textiles, sandalwood crafts, and sandalwood oil, and is especially famous for hand weaving, ivory and metalwork, and wood carving. Other industries include rice milling, oil extraction, chemicals, and leather tanning. Electricity for industry is supplied by hydroelectric power from Shivasamudram in the east. Tobacco and coffee are grown in the surrounding area. It is a quiet town with many historical sites, including the Indo-Islamic Maharaja's Palace (1897), wide streets and many parks. It is home to the University of Mysore and numerous colleges. Krishnagodavari Dam is 19 km northwest, and a 13th century Hindu temple is at Somnath to the east. Population 486,000 (1991). インド南西部,カルナータカ州南部の商工業都市。マイソール県の行政庁所在地。バンガロール南西約 125km,カウベリ川と,その支流カバニ川にはさまれた丘陵上,標高 770mに位置。 1610年マイソール藩王国が成立し,その首都として栄えた。 1799年第4次マイソール戦争に敗れてからは,イギリス支配のもとで行政中心地となったが,1831年行政中心地はバンガロールに移った。州南部の商工業中心地で,綿・絹織物,白檀細工,白檀油で知られ,特に手織物,象牙・金属細工,木彫が有名。ほかに精米,搾油,化学,皮なめしなどの工業がある。工業用電力は東部シバサムドラムの水力発電で供給される。周辺ではタバコ,コーヒーを栽培。インド=イスラム風のマハーラージャ王宮 (1897) をはじめ史跡が多く,広い街路と公園の多い静かな町。マイソール大学および多数の単科大学がある。 19km北西にクリシュナゴダバリダム,東方のソムナートには 13世紀のヒンドゥー寺院がある。人口 48万6 (1991) 。
