Kawajiri brush

Japanese: 川尻筆 - かわじりふで

A regional brand of the Chugoku region, Hiroshima prefecture.
They are produced in Kawajiri-cho, Kure City. In 1838 (Tenpo 9), Kikutani Sanzo purchased brushes from Arima in Setsu (now Hyogo Prefecture) and sold them at temple schools and other places. This was the beginning of the relationship between Kawajiri and brushes. Later, Ueno Yaekichi hired craftsmen from Arima and Matsue, and Kawajiri brush production began. In particular, the high-quality brushes made using a technique called kneading are famous. A traditional craft of Hiroshima Prefecture. In August 2004 (Heisei 16), it was designated a traditional craft of Japan by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry.

中国地方、広島県の地域ブランド。
呉市川尻町で製作されている。1838(天保9)年、菊谷三蔵が摂州有馬(現・兵庫県)から筆を仕入れて寺子屋などで販売した。これが川尻と筆の関わりの端緒。その後、上野八重吉が有馬・松江から職人を雇い入れて川尻筆製造が始まった。特に、練り混ぜという技法を用いた高級筆が有名。広島県伝統的工芸品。2004(平成16)年8月、経済産業大臣によって国の伝統的工芸品に指定。
