1910‐86 British tenor. He studied at the Royal College of Music in London, and later joined the BBC Chorus and other ensembles, before making his debut as an opera singer in London in 1942. In 1946, he helped found the English Opera Group, organized by Britten, and was involved in the premieres of Britten's operas, including Albert Herring (1947). In 1948, he co-founded the Aldeburgh Festival with Britten and served as festival director.
