British tenor. He studied at the Royal College of Music in London, and later joined the BBC Chorus and other ensembles, before making his debut as an opera singer in London in 1942. In 1946, he helped found the English Opera Group, organized by Britten, and was involved in the premieres of Britten's operas, including Albert Herring (1947). In 1948, he co-founded the Aldeburgh Festival with Britten and served as festival director. With a clear, instrumental voice, he was also praised for his performances of the Evangelical Passion and German Lieder.

イギリスのテノール歌手。ロンドンのローヤル音楽カレッジに学び，その後BBC合唱団などに所属，1942年ロンドンでオペラ歌手としてデビュー。46年ブリテンの主催する〈イギリス･オペラ･グループ〉の設立に協力し，《アルバート･ヘリング》(1947)をはじめとするブリテンのオペラの初演を手がけた。48年にブリテンとともにオールドバラ音楽祭を設立し音楽祭監督を務める。明晰で器楽的な声質をもち，受難曲の福音史家やドイツ･リートの演奏でも賞賛を得ている。
