A river that originates in the Andes Mountains in South America, flows eastward near the equator in northern Brazil, and empties into the Atlantic Ocean. It is the second largest river in the world, with a total length of 6,516 km. Its drainage area is the largest in the world, with 7.05 million km2 . It is estimated that the river accounts for 15 to 20% of the total river flow in the world, including the two main sources of the Marañón and Ucayali rivers in Peru, as well as more than 200 tributaries such as the Madeira, Negro, and Tapajos rivers. It has an extremely long navigable distance, with ocean-going ships sailing as far as Manaus and small vessels sailing as far as Iquitos in Peru. The river was named after an Indian female warrior (Amazon) who was encountered by Francisco de Orellana, who first reached the river's mouth in 1542. → Amazonia / Amazon Development Plan → Related topics Amazon Minamata disease | Xingu [river] | Selva | Brazil | Peru | Bolivia | Marajo [island] | South America Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
