Muḥammad 'Abduh

1849‐1905
Egyptian Islamic reformist. Born into a peasant family in the Nile Delta, he studied at the Al-Azhar Academy, and lectured at Al-Azhar in 1877, as well as teaching at the newly established Dar al-Uloom for the training of civil servants and teachers. During this time, under the ideological influence of Afghani, he joined the constitutional movement, and was exiled to his hometown in 1879. However, he returned to Cairo the following year and became editor of the Cairo Gazette. As one of the leading ulama supporting the national movement, he actively participated in the Arabi movement. After the defeat of the revolution in 1882, he was arrested and exiled, and in 1884, in Paris, where he worked with Afghani to publish the magazine A Solid Union, and engaged in agitation in the Muslim world.

エジプトのイスラム改革思想家。ナイル･デルタの小農の家庭に生まれたが，アズハル学院に学び，1877年アズハルで講じるほか，官吏･教員養成のため新設されたダール･アルウルームの教師ともなった。この間アフガーニーの思想的影響下で立憲運動に加わり，79年故郷に追放されたが，翌年カイロに戻って官報編集長となり，民族運動を支える指導的ウラマーの一人としてアラービー運動に積極的に参加した。82年革命の敗北により逮捕され，国外追放となり，84年亡命先のパリでアフガーニーと協力して《固き結合》誌を刊行し，ムスリム世界への扇動に従事した。
