1849‐1905 Egyptian Islamic reformist. Born into a peasant family in the Nile Delta, he studied at the Al-Azhar Academy, and lectured at Al-Azhar in 1877, as well as teaching at the newly established Dar al-Uloom for the training of civil servants and teachers. During this time, under the ideological influence of Afghani, he joined the constitutional movement, and was exiled to his hometown in 1879. However, he returned to Cairo the following year and became editor of the Cairo Gazette. As one of the leading ulama supporting the national movement, he actively participated in the Arabi movement. After the defeat of the revolution in 1882, he was arrested and exiled, and in 1884, in Paris, where he worked with Afghani to publish the magazine A Solid Union, and engaged in agitation in the Muslim world.
