Spiracle - Kimon

Japanese:
Spiracle - Kimon

A hole that opens on the surface of the body of an invertebrate animal that breathes through a trachea and is connected to the trachea. It is found in arthropods such as insects, centipedes, millipedes, scorpions, mites, and spiders, and in the clawed animals (prototracheal animals), the hookworms. Basically, there is one pair on each body segment except the head, and hookworms, centipedes, and millipedes are examples of this, but insects generally have a total of 10 pairs on the mesothorax, metathorax, and abdomen. However, even among insects, the number and activity of spiracles varies depending on the species and developmental stage. For example, in mosquitoes, the posterior pair is functional in the larvae, but in the pupa, the spiracles are replaced by the mesothorax spiracles, and in adults, the spiracles on the sides of the body open. In addition, many aquatic larvae have closed or degenerated spiracles and instead have tracheal gills. Some parasitic wasp larvae lack either tracheae or spiracles. In hookworms and spiders, the spiracles are merely openings formed by invagination of the cuticle, but in insects, many have developed muscles that open and close the spiracles, and many have cuticular hairs or small projections inside.
