A well-known example is the small-legged mayfly Myrmeleon formicarius , which makes a mortar-shaped burrow and captures prey that falls into it, but some species do not make burrows; the giant mayfly Heoclisis japonica hides by burying itself in the sand on the beach, and the small-spotted mayfly Dendroleon jezoensis camouflages itself as lichen growing on the surface of rocks and lies in wait for prey.
