Osamu Kimata

Japanese: 木俣修 - きまたおさむ
Osamu Kimata

Poet and Japanese literature scholar. Born in Shiga Prefecture. Real name Shuji. Graduated from Tokyo Higher Normal School, Department of Literature. After graduating from Miyagi Normal School and the former Toyama High School, he became a professor at Showa Women's University and Jissen Women's University after the war. Doctor of Literature. In 1928 (Showa 3), he joined the magazine Koran, presided over by Kitahara Hakushu. After publishing Tanka Minzoku and Hakushu Zasshi, he helped found Tama in 1935 and deepened his devotion to Hakushu. After Hakushu's death, he began editing Tama and organizing Hakushu's posthumous manuscripts from 1943. In 1952, ten years after Hakushu's death, he dissolved Tama, and in 1953 he founded and presided over Keisei. Kimata started out with a naturally romantic poetic quality and the influence of Hakushu, but as he experienced the deaths of his wife and eldest son, and the postwar experiences, he strengthened his humanistic inclinations. As a scholar, poet, and person, he looked into the inner world of people who honestly confront reality, and in his later years, he opened up a free-spirited state of mind in life. His poetry collections include "Koshi" (1942), "Winter Calendar" (1948), "Frozen Sky Longing" (1951), "Echoes When You Call" (1964), and "Last Year, This Year" (1967). He has written many books of poetry, including "Hakushu Research" and "Showa Tanka History." He has been the first member of the Tanka Society since 1959. He received the Minister of Education's Art Encouragement Prize in 1974, and the Modern Tanka Grand Prize in 1982.

[Takashi Hidaka]

I stand up and look at the waves, but there is nothing I can do. I watch the winter waves of Koshi.
