Algal Mat - Algal Mat

...A sedimentary structure consisting of laminae of biological origin, the word deriving from stromatolith, named by E. Karkowski in 1908. The appearance can be flat or wavy mat-like (algal mat), dome-like, nodular, spherical, or columnar, but the characteristic laminar structure is formed by overlapping layers of 0.6 to 1.0 mm in thickness. The overall thickness and diameter vary widely, ranging from about 1 cm to over 1 m.
