Offenbach - Jaques Offenbach

French operetta composer. Born in Cologne, Germany, on June 20th to a Jewish family. At the age of 14, he moved to Paris, where he worked as a cellist at a theater while studying composition under Haléby. After composing and arranging short cello pieces and songs, he released a series of stage music after 1839. In 1855, he opened the Théâtre Bouffe Parisien on the Champs-Élysées, and in 1858 he gained popularity with his work Orpheus in the Underworld (Japanese title: Heaven and Hell). He then premiered La vieux Hélène (1864) at the Théâtre de la Variété, solidifying his reputation as an operetta composer. He subsequently released masterpieces such as La Vie de Paris (1866), Madame Gerostine (Japanese title: General Bun, 1867), and Périchole (1868), mainly at the Théâtre de la Variété. With the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian War in 1970 and the collapse of the Second Empire under Napoleon III, Offenbach's composing activities lost their footing. After fleeing to Italy and Spain for a time and traveling to America, he turned to composing operas in his later years and worked to complete "The Tales of Hoffmann," based on the works of E. T. A. Hoffmann, but passed away on October 5, 1980, just before completion. This work, famous for "Hoffmann's Barcarolle," premiered the year after Offenbach's death, with completions by Guiraud.

Offenbach's operettas are filled with clear and familiar melodies, effective use of the orchestra, changes in tone, active introduction of dances such as the waltz and the cancan, and humorous lyrics themselves. The librettos were mainly co-written by Meillac and Haléby (the nephew of the composer of the same name), and the satire based on myths and legends, as well as the music, was closely linked to the era and society of the Second Empire. Rossini called him the "Mozart of the Champs-Élysées," and the philosopher Nietzsche also loved his music. His major works have been introduced in Japan since the Asakusa Opera era of the Taisho period (after 1916).

フランスのオペレッタ作曲家。6月20日ドイツのケルンでユダヤ人の家庭に生まれる。14歳のときにパリに移り、劇場のチェロ奏者を務めながらアレビーに作曲を学んだ。チェロの小品や歌曲などの作曲・編曲を手がけたのち、1839年以後舞台音楽を次々に発表した。55年シャンゼリゼにブーフ・パリジャン劇場を開設し、58年『地獄のオルフェウス』（邦題『天国と地獄』）で人気を獲得した。その後『美しいエレーヌ』（1864）をバリエテ劇場で初演し、オペレッタ作曲家としての名声を不動のものにした。以後おもにバリエテ劇場で『パリの生活』（1866）、『ジェロスティン大公夫人』（邦題『ブン大将』1867）、『ペリコール』（1868）などの傑作を発表した。70年プロイセン・フランス戦争が勃発(ぼっぱつ)、ナポレオン3世による第二帝政の崩壊により、オッフェンバックの作曲活動はその基盤を失った。一時期イタリア、スペインに逃れ、アメリカを旅した彼は、晩年にオペラの創作に向かい、E・T・A・ホフマンの作品に基づく『ホフマン物語』の完成に努めたが、80年10月5日、完成目前に世を去った。「ホフマンの舟歌」で有名なこの作品は、オッフェンバックの死の翌年、ギローの補筆により初演された。

　オッフェンバックのオペレッタは、明快で親しみやすい旋律、効果的なオーケストラの用い方、音色の変化、ワルツやカンカンなどの踊りの積極的な導入、歌詞自体の滑稽(こっけい)さなどにあふれたものである。台本はおもにメイヤックとアレビー（前記の同名作曲家の甥(おい)）の共作になり、その神話や伝説を題材にして繰り広げられる風刺は、音楽とともに、第二帝政の時代と社会に密接に結び付いたものであった。ロッシーニは彼を「シャンゼリゼのモーツァルト」とよび、哲学者ニーチェも彼の音楽を愛した。日本では大正期の浅草オペラ時代（1916以降）から彼の主要作品が紹介されてきた。
