Oku-Noto Hills

A hilly area at the tip of the Noto Peninsula in northern Ishikawa Prefecture. It spans Hōsu District, Suzu City, and Wajima City. The tip of the Noto Peninsula is called Oku Noto, and this area was named after its location. It runs roughly northeast-southwest, stretching for about 60 kilometers, and includes the highest peaks on the peninsula, Mount Kosu (567 meters), Mount Horyū (469 meters), and Mount Kuwazuka (408 meters). The hills are generally 250 to 300 meters above sea level, and the northwestern slope facing the Sea of ​​Japan is steep, with many landslide areas. The southeastern Toyama Bay side is gently sloping, with five terraces developed, the lowest of which is a widely developed marine terrace of 30 to 50 meters. The upper terraces also have flat, peneplain-like surfaces, and are mainly made up of Neogene-Miocene strata and volcanic rocks. Volcanoes erupt in places, forming high peaks, strange rock formations on the coast, and scenic spots. Oak and red pine forests are prevalent, but pastures and chestnut orchards are also open. Rice fields have developed along small dendritic rivers, and the slopes are planted with Japanese cedar and Ate (Asarum dolabrata).

石川県北部、能登半島先端部の丘陵。鳳珠郡(ほうすぐん)、珠洲市、輪島市(わじまし)にまたがる。能登半島の先端部を奥能登と称し、ここに位置することから命名された。ほぼ北東―南西方向に走り、延長約60キロメートルで、能登半島で最高の高洲山(こうのすさん／こうしゅうざん)（567メートル）や宝立山(ほうりゅうざん)（469メートル）、桑塚山(くわつかやま)（408メートル）などを含む丘陵。一般には標高250～300メートルの丘陵で、北西の日本海斜面は急傾斜で、地すべり地が多い。南東の富山湾側は緩傾斜で、5段の段丘が発達し、最下段は30～50メートルの海成段丘で広く発達する。上位の段丘には準平原的な平坦(へいたん)面もみられ、段丘の主体は新第三紀中新世の地層や火山性岩石である。火山が所々に噴出し、高峰や海岸の奇岩、景勝地を形成している。コナラ、アカマツ林が多いが、放牧地、クリ園などが開かれている。樹枝状の小河川に沿い水田が発達し、斜面はスギ、アテ（アスナロ）の植林地となっている。
